Afrocats and Walk the Plank brought people together to have conversations, cook together and dance in celebration Nous travaillons avec les communautés pour co-créer des opportunités pour les personnes confrontées à des difficultés dans leur vie et qui souhaitent s'intégrer pleinement dans la société. Nous sommes passionnés par l'élimination des barrières sociales, économiques, culturelles et linguistiques afin que les gens puissent avoir une meilleure qualité de vie. Women from Afrocats were at the event to showcase their cooking expertise through cultural foods that were close to their hearts. Four women of Pakistani, Nigerian and Sierra Leonean descent cooked their cultural foods. The women from Pakistan cooked vegetable pilau and chickpea curry. The Nigerian lady chose to prepare jollof rice and the lady from Sierra Leone prepared puff puff and plantain. People from Walk the Plank offered the chefs a helping hand where needed. This included getting any ingredients, that they were short of from the store to finding cutlery or anything else the ladies required. ​ After the participants had finished preparing food, the food was laid out beautifully on the table for everyone to enjoy and have conversations and learn more about Afrocats and Walk the Plank and their upcoming events. People from Afrocats as well as people from Walk the Plank then began to dance to different types of songs until more people joined the event and also joined them in dancing. ​ When asked about their favourite part of the event, the women said: “to serve food and to serve people”. “cooking with everyone was my favourite” “the fact that we are different and we come together” “it’s fulfilling” “I learned about different cultures, cultural skills that are different to mine” “I like that it’s far from my home” “travelling, seeing other people, cook, we learn from each other” "the unity and diversity of the event eased my anxiety and tensions, I am relaxed”. Additionally, one of the members of the Walk the Plank organisation shared her thoughts from the day: “I love everyone coming together. Everyone doing different things, getting busy”, “happy, doing little bits to come together”. “The food was delicious; I rarely get the chance to eat food from the cultures” ​ “My favourite part was probably the movement; it allowed the children and I to loosen up a bit and everyone was involved in it so it was like a small bonding session” ​ “I love the African beats because I was able to show my dancing skills” ​ “Food presentation was very nice” ​ “I felt comfortable because they were people from my community” ​ “I felt comfortable, everyone was sweet and welcoming and it allowed you to get involved right away” ​ “I would come again because it was a nice setting and a reason to leave the house”

What does it mean to be a ‘child of the world’ in the UK in 2021 and what does it mean to be a citizen of Manchester? Tout au long de l'année, nous explorerons leurs expériences au Royaume-Uni et dans leurs pays d'origine en utilisant le théâtre et la musique pour créer une performance cross-art. Les jeunes collaborateurs travailleront aux côtés d'artistes professionnels pour développer leurs compétences créatives et être à la pointe du processus créatif en utilisant les arts pour façonner leurs récits. Ce projet est suspendu en raison des restrictions de Covid. Devised and developed by the performers themselves, Umbrellas In The Sun brings together inspirations from as far and wide as Nigeria, Ghana and Syria to speak of identity, nationhood and distinct cultures, all the while celebrating the things that unite young people beyond nationality and language. Told through dance, singing, drama and improvised performance, the journey across the world begins starts at home, in Manchester, a shared love for every young performer, the place they call home. We Cannot Walk Alone is a film made by our amazing young collaborators for Horizons Festival and Refugee week.

Grâce au financement de Children in Need et Forever Manchester, nous avons pu travailler rapidement pour répondre aux besoins des communautés que nous soutenons pendant la crise Covid Enfants et jeunes Grâce au financement d'une subvention de rappel pour les enfants dans le besoin, nous avons pu travailler avec des enfants et des jeunes issus de groupes minoritaires pendant la pandémie. Nous avons également pu fournir des tablettes et des données aux jeunes dans le besoin pour les aider à faire leurs devoirs, à se connecter et à dialoguer avec leurs pairs pendant cette période difficile. Notre impact 18 Jeunes réfugiés soutenus tout au long de la pandémie Nous avons soutenu des jeunes du Pakistan, de l'Inde, du Nigéria, du Ghana, de la République démocratique du Congo et de la Sierra Leone. Les participants ont invité leurs amis qui étaient deux enfants d'origine britannique scolarisés à domicile, d'origine mixte caribéenne et blanche, et un jeune d'origine britannique. Ils ont tous participé à: 16 Sessions livrées en ligne entre juillet et octobre 2020 3 sessions de musique 4 séances d'arts et d'artisanat 1 séance de théâtre 1 séance de poésie 1 séance de yoga 1 séance de danse 2 sessions d'espagnol 1 consultation 2 séances d'évaluation sept Les enfants ont reçu des comprimés pour pouvoir assister aux séances et terminer leurs travaux scolaires Soutien aux adultes Grâce au financement de Forever Manchester et de nos bénévoles dévoués, nous avons pu fabriquer des colis alimentaires culturellement appropriés pour soutenir les adultes confrontés à l'isolement en raison de la crise de Covid. Notre premier dépôt de colis aura lieu en novembre 2020. Youth of the World timetable 2023 Afrocats are funded by Children in Need, Didymus and the National Lottery Community Fund to provide children and young people aged 7 to 18 with creative, cultural and leadership activities. Afrocats will provide children aged 7-12 with FREE creative sessions in poetry, dance, arts and craft, drama, singing, and music-making. Young people aged 12+ who have interests in debating, poetry, volunteering and leadership will have the opportunity to enhance their skills. You will learn about social activism and share your thoughts on culture and society. Children and young people who come from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds and their friends will be able to participate in these FREE exciting, creative, and educational projects. ​ Workshops will occur during each school term holiday and Saturday mornings. ​ If you think your child would benefit from this opportunity please email info@afrocats.org.uk
